'YOU WILL BE INCORPORATED!'

An award-winning portrait of corporate culture run amok in which a single neoconservative executive recruits an army of clones to attack, behead and 'incorporate' an old money industrialist. The film features an aggressive, stellar musical composition by Jim Guthrie. This is the first pixel film by SUPERBROTHERS.

There are fewwer scenarios in life that infuriate me as much as ones like this excerpt below chronicles. Being in an art related field most all my life I find the curious clients that bid for my time and my talent feels more like someone who is flirting to get their rocks off as they fully intend to go back home to the mundane routine. It feels insulting to go through and entire courting process with a prospective client and have them back out for their nephew in Buford Falls, MN who will do the same task for a snickers bar.

Years ago, as 224 in Boardman and Canfield was being developed, I was working at the McDonough Museum as the Exhibition Preparator, the number 2 position at that facility. A local businessman came in, looking for artwork to hang in his new million dollar office building just off 224. He promoted himself as shrewed, successful and highly refined culturally. I showed him my work and the work of several other regional artists whose work had achieved a great deal of national respect, then later on that day I took a ride out to see his new building. It was a beautiful, sleek, contemporary structure with a futuristic look to it. Though it wasn't large it was certainly impressive. He explained that he was looking for at least one very large painting for the rather lavish lobby. I quoted him some prices for my work and the work of the other artists I'd showed him at the museum, prices that were very reasonable for this high caliber work. After a few days, I called him and he told me that he thought my prices were too high and that he found a local high school student to do a large painting for the lobby for a mere two hundred dollars! I had to choke back a condescending guffaw as he further went on to explain that in his refined cultural wisdom he was certain this student could create work as good as any artist I'd shown him. Hannah Woodroofe is a self-taught painter who grew up in New England and
spent several years in Chicago. She now lives in Youngstown, Ohio. Woodroofe
has been making paintings and collages at a brisk pace since 2005. During
this time, her work has been shown in Amtrak train cars, Indiana movie
theaters, and galleries in London and Chicago. She has also illustrated a
handful of small-press chapbooks.

For this series, Woodroofe uses acrylic ink, photocopies, and tightly
collaged imagery from the 1916 Sears & Roebuck catalog to construct rooms in
an imaginary Midwestern town— not unlike Youngstown— circa 1980. Her aim is
to isolate, elaborate, and conflate the decorative odds and ends marketed to
working families over time, engaging the question of what a particularly
American interior is, and what it could be.

I like this.

This, I find certainly intriguing.

One of my favorite stop animation filmmakers. I was introduced to the art work of this fine fellow a few years ago whilst a short stay in Brooklyn. It's fantastic stuff.

I’m currently working on a piece for a benefit supporting the local arts organization, The Kitchen. The event, scheduled for May 21st at the Puck Building, will honor artist and DJ Christian Marclay. I like much of Marclay’s work, so my piece is sort of a tribute to him — or at least it’s fairly inspired by his work. My piece will be comprised of a kind of carpet of one hundred guitar pedals, which benefit attendees must walk on in order to enter the main dining and performance space. A guitar will be plugged into and run through all the pedals, and then into an amp. We’ve tested a portion of it to see if there are any unexpected problems and I was surprised to discover how well it works. Of course, the sounds are fairly random, and stepping on one or two of the distortion or fuzz pedals raises the screaming noise level pretty high, but that will be adjusted. Happily, some pedals will loop whatever is going on at the time of their activation, and so there will be constant sound changing all the time. Here is a picture of it partially finished in my studio:

The organizers pragmatically pointed out that there could be issues for attendees in heels, as did CS. I had hoped to make participation in the installation mandatory, something each guest would have to experience in order to move from cocktails to the next part of the event. But women’s heels will be my Achilles heel, uh, duh…It’ll still be OK. We’ll just have to leave a narrow passageway or alternate route for the heeled ladies, or place the thing in a less obtrusive location.

Playing the building is a sound installation in which the infrastructure, the physical plant of the building, is converted into a giant musical instrument. Devices are attached to the building structure -- to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes -- and are used to make these things produce sound. The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument.

Vice Magazine's always terrific "Art Talk!" on VBS.TV put together a terrific two part video interview with Barry McGee. For the piece, McGee took took the interview he did for VBS.TV with Aaron Rose and animated so that it becomes part of the art itself.

Jermaine Rogers is a fabulous illustrator, and recently had the opportunity to collaborate with legendary artist and performer Daniel Johnston. “I really felt very privileged to work on something with him, and the fact that he owns previous works of mine and wanted to collaborate on something with me was humbling. For years, I've basically wanted to surround a Daniel Johnston 'Captain America' drawing with a gang of my Dero bears...so it came out just like I had always imagined,” said Rogers.
This screen-printed poster commemorates Johnston's recent appearance at the Smokebrush Gallery in Colorado. Johnston's career was just examined in the award-winning documentary film The Devil & Daniel Johnston and his artwork was recently exhibited at the Whitney Museum Of American Art in New York City.
In the spirit of Johnston's work, there are a variety of styles within this edition, which is limited to 150. Rogers experimented with many different printing variations on the image. There are copies printed in different inks, on different stock, with gradient fades, with glow-in-the-dark ink, with psychedelic effects, day-glow versions and more subdued versions, etc. So if you’re feeling gutsy, make a mental note to grab one of these prints tomorrow, April 11th, at 2pm Mountain time, right here.

Blek le Rat's solo exhibition will open this weekend, Saturday April 5th, at Los Angeles-based gallery, Subliminal Projects. Titled Art is Not Peace but War, this will be Blek le Rat’s first solo show in the United States!
This legendary street artist is considered to be a pioneer of stencil art. First exposed to graffiti in New York in 1971, it took him a decade to start making his own in Paris. Inspired by a stenciled portrait he saw of Mussolini amongst WWII ruins in Italy, he created a stencil of a rat running along the streets. Hence, Blek le Rat was born and the rest, as they say, has been history.
Blek’s method of creating graffiti has forever altered the art scene and still continues to inspire and influence street artists today. His work has evolved beyond the rat icon and has taken on a more serious context, using art as a mouthpiece for social change.
Blek has made good use of his time thus far before his opening in Los Angeles. Like a good street artist, he’s been hitting up the streets of LA with endless devotion and passion. Some photos of Blek’s most recent work in LA here…
